50 Kitchen

50 Kitchen is a restaurant and catering service in Fields Corner, Dorchester. The fusion cuisine menu featuring Asian and Southern influence is inspired by the neighborhood’s multicultural population. Husband-and-wife owners Anthony and Evette Caldwell are committed to creating job opportunities in the local community. In 2019, BII Fund partnered with LEAF, the City of Boston, and a landlord improvement allowance to provide start-up capital. Learn more

 

88 Acres

88 Acres is an artisan food enterprise that produces healthy snacks free of the top eight food allergens. Their Dorchester-based manufacturing center generates more than a dozen good jobs for the local community. In 2017, BII Fund made a convertible debt investment to provide growth capital for expansion throughout the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions. The investment included impact covenants focused on maintaining fair wages, team diversity, local sourcing, employee stock option program, and more. Learn more

Care Academy

Care Academy provides professional and family caregivers with high-quality online training classes to help deliver the best care to older adults with the support, guidance and compassion needed to improve their quality of life. The platform makes it easier for caregivers to upskill and continue their education to better serve clients and advance their careers. Co-founders Helen Adeosun and Dr. Madhuri Reddy are committed to serving caregivers who, like themselves, are often women of color and immigrants. In 2018, BII Fund participated in an equity round. CERO

CERO (Cooperative Energy Recycling and Organics) is a worker-owned cooperative that collects waste from local businesses. CERO’s waste separation systems increase reclamation and sale of clean paper, plastics, metals, waste vegetable oil and organic food waste, reducing trash sent to landfill and incinerators by 50 percent or more. CERO has been a long-time portfolio member of the Boston Impact Initiative LLC. In 2017, BII Fund provided a loan for working capital. Learn more

COHIF

Coalition of Occupied Homes in Foreclosure (COHIF) works to stabilize the Greater Four Corners neighborhood of Dorchester by helping residents of foreclosed homes to stay in their homes, developing permanently affordable housing, and helping extend these efforts in other neighborhoods. The organization intends to place its homes into a community land trust. In 2018, BII Fund provided a loan to support COHIF’s Community Stabilization Pilot Project, advancing crucial anti-displacement strategies in Boston. Learn more

Commonwealth Kitchen

Commonwealth Kitchen is a nonprofit culinary incubator that provides shared kitchen space for small food-related businesses. Since 2009, CWK has launched more than 120 businesses. The incubator currently services 50 businesses per month, 70 percent of which are women- or minority-owned, and has created over 350 jobs. BII has been investing in CWK since 2013. In 2019, BII provided a grant to the Dorchester-based commercial kitchen to support local food entrepreneurs. Learn more

Cooperative Fund of New England

The Cooperative Fund of New England (CFNE) is a community development loan fund that facilitates socially responsible investing in cooperatives, community-oriented nonprofits, and worker-owned businesses in New England and New York. CFNE provides financial products, business assistance, and investment opportunities that promote socially conscious enterprise. Boston Impact Initiative is an investor in CFNE’s Social Investment Fund, as well as a frequent co-investor in direct lending to cooperatives. Learn more

Delectable Desires

Delectable Desires Pastries provides gourmet home-baked goods from scratch, specializing in event cakes. DDP opened its first retail store in West Roxbury in 2015, followed by a South Station kiosk a year later. Owner Carlene O’Garro, a Mattapan native, says that her Caribbean roots influence her use of ingredients and baking style. Forgoing law school to pursue her passion, Carlene has received numerous awards for DDP. In 2017, BII Fund provided a working capital loan to support growth. Learn more

 

Democracy Brewing

Democracy Brewing is a start-up worker-owned brewery and pub committed to providing great beer and hosting community conversations about democratic ideals of liberty, justice and equal opportunity. As a cooperative, the business creates the opportunity for all its workers to enjoy the profit and pride that comes with ownership. The Brewery will open its doors at 35 Temple Place in March 2018. In 2017, BII Fund purchased Direct Public Offering shares. Learn more

Done Good

DoneGood, a certified B Corp, is an app and browser extension that harnesses consumer purchasing as a force for change, helping consumers discover vetted companies with ethical practices across eight categories: Go Green, Give Back, Support Workers, Nontoxic, Made in USA, Cruelty Free, Organic, and Diversity. In 2017, BII Fund made a convertible debt investment to support the platform in its efforts to redirect consumer dollars toward businesses owned by people of color and women. Learn more

Five Star Plating

Five Star Plating provides quality metal coating and plating services in Massachusetts. Headquartered in Lawrence, MA, they employ over 47 community members and plan to grow their productive capacity, offer new services, and automate processes, adding 30 more jobs in the next three years. The CEO and founder, Fausto Garcia, is a Latino business owner with more than 20 years of experience in the metal plating industry. In 2019, BII Fund provided Five Star Plating with a loan to facilitate this growth. Learn more

Fresh Food Generation

Fresh Food Generation is a cafe, food truck and catering business serving on-the-go real foods. The company sources ingredients from local farms and prepares meals inspired by Latin American and Caribbean cuisine. After three years of operating, the company is now becoming a competitive city-wide catering business. In 2018, BII Fund provided a line of credit and convertible debt coupled with an innovative “self-liquidating equity” structure which allows management to buy back equity at fair and mutually agreed upon price. Learn more

Futuro Media

Futuro Media Group creates multimedia content for and about underrepresented communities in an increasingly diverse world. Founder Maria Hinojosa is an award-winning news anchor and reporter who has covered America’s untold stories for over two decades. Futuro has developed the Community Podcast Lab, a 15-week pilot program in Boston focused on elevating the narratives and cultivating the story-telling skills of people of color in Boston. In 2019, BII provided a bridge loan to support podcast development. Learn more

M.S. Peltier Insurance

M.S. Peltier Insurance is a black-owned business with expertise in the construction, marine, real estate and transportation industries. The company plans to maintain at least 50 percent employees of color as it grows its workforce. M.S. Peltier has a long history of serving Dorchester and Caribbean communities. Boston Impact Initiative provided a loan to support the acquisition of new clients.

Math Talk PBC

Math Talk is a community-focused education technology Public Benefit Corporation based in Cambridge, MA. Using playful installations, technology and books, Math Talk promotes early math and language development among children. It uses the latest scientific research on cognitive development and is rooted in the cultures of local communities of color. In 2019, BII Fund made an investment to enable the company to further develop its Mathscapes and mobile app. Learn more

Maven Construction is a woman- and minority-owned general contracting firm that provides construction management services. The Dorchester-based start-up focuses on energy efficiency projects. Founder JocCole “JC” Burton is a construction industry veteran who plans to develop innovative construction careers for people of color and women. In 2018, BII Fund provided project finance to support an energy efficiency project with Howard University. Learn more

Meetcaregivers

Meetcaregivers is a home healthcare business that connects families with pre-screened and qualified caregivers for their aging parents at as much as half the cost of traditional agencies. Recently, the business developed a basic/free version of an app that can track and coordinate health among caregiver and family members. In 2019, BII Fund provided a growth capital loan to support the company’s plans to develop the app and expand their technology, marketing and sales teams. Learn more.

Mobile Cuts is a mobile barbershop that brings salon services right to your doorstep. The company is capitalizing on the growing trend of corporations and universities to offer services through vendors that stop by one day a week or for a couple hours at a time. Pristine Engineers provides engineering, design, and construction administration services on HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and renewable energy systems. Quality Interactions

Quality Interactions is an e-learning platform that provides cultural competency training for healthcare professionals. The platform helps healthcare providers reduce unconscious bias and as a result improve health outcomes for patients of all cultural backgrounds, including people of color, immigrant, bilingual and LGBTQ patients, and those who are uninsured. In 2018, BII Fund made a convertible debt investment to support product development and growth. Learn more

Somerville Community Corporation is a membership organization that offers services and leads community organizing with low- and moderate-income Somerville residents. They focus on access to affordable housing, employment programs that connect workers to good jobs, and leadership and civic participation within underrepresented communities. Sunwealth

Sunwealth is a pioneering clean energy investment firm working to unleash the power of commercial solar by delivering meaningful returns and tangible impact. In 2017, the company received loans from the BII pilot fund to help finance clean energy on houses of worship and to aggregate solar energy on low-income housing and anchor non-profits in economically distressed neighborhoods. In 2019, BII Fund made an equity investment into Sunwealth to support the company’s growth. Learn more

Sweet Teez

Sweet Teez Bakery is a nut-free bakery founded by Dorchester native Teresa Thompson Maynard. Growing up with food allergies and now raising kids with food allergies, Teresa realized that just one peanut can make the search for a good cupcake near impossible. So she set out to provide customers with high quality baked goods made to meet their nut-free needs and delight their taste buds. In 2018, BII Fund provided purchase order finance to help Sweet Teez fulfill a Whole Foods order of 48,000 pies. Learn more

TARTTs Day Care Centers

Tartts Day Care is family-owned business that provides quality childcare services for children ages two months to five years. Founded by African-American nurse Bessie Tartt Wilson in 1946, the company is now run by second, third, and forth generation family members. They currently serve over 250 children a year and plan to operate five boutique childcare centers in the Boston area by 2024. In 2019, BII made a loan for operational expenses of establishing a new center. Learn more

TC's Repair Service

TC’s Repair Service specializes in repairing commercial coffee brewers, grinders, espresso machines, hot water towers and juice dispensers. The company serves coffee chain shops, cafes, restaurants and coffee machine manufacturers. Husband-and-wife team Mario and Rachel Rodrigues decided to acquire the company based on Mario’s experience as a customer of TC’s Repair when he worked at Equal Exchange. In 2018, BII Fund provided financing for the acquisition. Learn more

Transformative Culture Project

In October 2017, the Transformative Culture Project merged with Epicenter Community. The non-profit organization now focuses on the economic potential of the creative economy, providing award-winning arts and economic development programming for youth and adults. A key program is AccelerateBOS, which provides entrepreneurs of color with a cohort-based model for advancing their business ideas. In 2017, BII Fund provided bridge finance to support the merger. Urban Farming Institute

The Urban Farming Institute of Boston, located at the historic Fowler Clark Epstein Farm in Mattapan, provides farmer training, creates green collar jobs and engages urban communities in building a healthy, local food system. The non-profit organization reclaims and restores vacant lots, transforming them into functioning urban farms.  In 2018, BII Fund provided bridge finance to support the acquisition of equipment and supplies for the upcoming farming season. Learn more

Wash Cycle Laundry is a commercial laundry service that provides second-chance employment for vulnerable adults in Boston, Philadelphia and Washington DC. The company relies on high-efficiency washers and driers and delivers laundry by bike–saving thousands of gallons of water a year as well as fuel.
