This Giving Tuesday: Meet the Nonprofits Building a More Just and Equitable Future

As we gather around tables this Thanksgiving week, reflecting on gratitude and community, Giving Tuesday offers us a powerful opportunity to turn that gratitude into action. This year, we’re celebrating the incredible work of ten nonprofits in our portfolio who are doing more than just addressing symptoms—they’re reimagining systems, building community wealth, and creating pathways to economic justice.

These organizations share a common thread: they believe that lasting change comes from empowering communities, not just serving them. From clean energy access to affordable housing, from cooperative ownership to storytelling that shifts narratives, each is working to build an economy that works for everyone.

Energy Justice and Climate Action

All In Energy is proving that the clean energy transition must be inclusive to be successful. They’re bringing energy efficiency and renewable energy directly to underserved communities while simultaneously creating job opportunities for diverse talent in the growing clean energy sector. Their work recognizes that climate action and economic justice aren’t separate goals—they’re inseparable.

Housing as a Human Right

Three organizations in our portfolio are tackling the housing crisis head-on, each in their own community:

East Boston Community Development Corporation (EBCDC) addresses both housing and employment challenges simultaneously, creating affordable homes for low- and moderate-income families and seniors while expanding job opportunities in East Boston. To make a donation, please mail a check to East Boston Community Development Corporation, 80 Border Street, East Boston, MA 02128.

Housing Corporation of Arlington (HCA) goes beyond simply providing roofs over heads. They create stable, affordable housing while empowering residents to build community together, recognizing that housing stability is the foundation for everything else.

Somerville Community Corporation takes a comprehensive approach to equity, weaving together affordable housing, community building, economic mobility programs, and resident empowerment to create lasting change in Somerville and beyond.

Community Development Rooted in Culture

Caribbean Integration Community Development (CICD) understands that vibrant neighborhoods are built on cultural strength. Working with and for Caribbean immigrants and people of color, CICD creates affordable housing and revitalization programs that don’t just preserve but celebrate ethnic, cultural, and racial diversity while advancing economic and social well-being across Boston.

The Cooperative Economy

Three organizations are demonstrating the transformative power of cooperative ownership:

Cooperative Fund of the Northeast (CFNE) is the financial engine behind community-based, democratically owned enterprises. By providing capital, business development support, and investment opportunities focused on cooperatives in low-income communities, they’re helping build an economy based on shared ownership and shared prosperity.

Dorchester Food Cooperative is challenging the extractive traditional food system by building a community and worker-owned grocery that nourishes residents, employs neighbors, and keeps money circulating locally—proof that another food system is possible.

Wellspring Cooperative is building the solidarity economy by creating a network of worker cooperatives in Springfield (including Wellspring Harvest Co-op, a BII Portfolio Company). Partnering with anchor institutions, they create worker-owned businesses that provide living wage jobs and wealth-building opportunities for low-income residents, transforming this New England city through democratic ownership.

Wisdom and Narrative Change

Ayni Institute brings a unique perspective to social change by investing in leaders and organizations building a world of reciprocity. Through research, training, coaching, and project incubation, they center social movements and intergenerational indigenous wisdom, empowering a new generation of leaders committed to lasting, meaningful change.

Futuro Media Group recognizes that the stories we tell shape the world we build. Creating multimedia content for and about the new American mainstream, they empower people to navigate and embrace our increasingly diverse and connected world, one story at a time.
