Your Next Opportunity Is Already in the Room
By Samalid Hogan, Director of Business Support Services
April always feels like a quiet turning point, especially for impact and mission-driven businesses.
The energy of the new year has settled, but the real opportunities to create meaningful change have not yet fully taken off. There is a small window where conversations are still forming, partnerships are still flexible, and doors are easier to open. What you do now can shape both your growth and your impact for the rest of the year.
Early in my career, I believed growth came from reaching as many people as possible. I spent hours sending messages, introducing myself, and pitching services. Sometimes it worked, but most of the time it felt slow and disconnected. Every conversation started from zero.
Everything changed when I shifted my focus from outreach to building relationships.
I remember attending a small networking event where there was no pressure to pitch or perform, just people openly sharing what they were working on and where they needed support. That experience changed how I approached those rooms. Instead of trying to sell anything, I focused on listening. I made thoughtful introductions between people who could help each other, and I followed up to keep the conversation going. That shift turned a single event into multiple meaningful relationships and opportunities that would not have come from a quick exchange.
Within weeks, opportunities started to appear. Referrals, partnerships, and invitations into rooms I would not have accessed on my own.
None of that came from cold outreach. It came from building relationships and trust.
For mission-driven businesses, relationships accelerate both growth and impact. When people understand your purpose and see your work, collaboration becomes easier.
As we move through the second quarter of the year, ask yourself where your next opportunity is most likely to come from. A cold message or a trusted relationship.
The strongest growth and impact come from connecting with the right people.
