Working Smarter with AI: Strengthening Your Business and Your Community
By Samalid Hogan, Director of Business Support Services

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing how businesses operate, and small businesses have an opportunity to benefit. From managing administrative tasks to improving customer communications and marketing, AI can help business owners save time, reduce costs, and focus on growing their businesses.
But the real opportunity goes beyond efficiency. When businesses operate more effectively, they can dedicate more resources to supporting employees, serving customers, and creating opportunities in their communities.
AI can support the strengthening of a business, and subsequently the strengthening of their community, but adopting it responsibly requires planning, clear policies, and investment in people.
Invest in Yourself and Your Employees
Business owners don’t need to become AI experts, but they should understand how these tools work, their limitations, and where they can add value.
Equally important is investing in employee training. Giving your team the skills and confidence to use AI can improve productivity while creating opportunities for professional growth.
The goal shouldn’t be to replace people with technology, but to help employees work more effectively and focus on tasks that benefit from their experience, creativity, and relationships.
Establish an AI Policy
Even if your business hasn’t formally adopted AI, your employees may already be using it.
Having a clear AI policy helps protect your business, employees, and customers. At a minimum, it should establish guidelines for approved tools, data privacy, confidentiality, accuracy, and human oversight.
An AI policy doesn’t have to be complicated. It simply needs to provide clear expectations so employees can use technology responsibly and confidently.
Think Beyond Your Bottom Line
For businesses committed to making a positive impact, the question isn’t just how much time or money AI can save. It’s also what you can do with those savings.
Could improved efficiency allow you to invest more in employee development, expand services to underserved communities, or pursue contracts that create local jobs?
Start small. Identify one area where AI could improve your operations, provide appropriate training, establish safeguards, and evaluate the results.
Technology alone doesn’t create stronger businesses or communities. It’s how we choose to use it that makes the difference.
At BII, we encourage entrepreneurs to embrace innovation in ways that strengthen their businesses, invest in their people, and contribute to more resilient local economies.
